Here’s a little something I’ve been working on for a long time, but only finally finished today.
It’s inspired by the kinds of maps you get in SFF novels.. (one of my secret vices) but applied specifically to the many facets of therapy and the therapeutic relationship. And it requires careful reading because the sarcasm is in the detail.
And if you look (yes this requires effort which I know is unpopular on the internet
), you will actually see the journey that most of us take.
As you can see, I’ve made the map clickable so you can view it in more detail but I’ve also covered it in copyrights and kept it low-res because (as I think we all know by now) stealing content is uncool.
If you really like it and want a copy without the big blue © labels, then the lovely people at CP will be no doubt be delighted to print, frame and ship.
The prints are available HERE.

/ February 5, 2011Absolutely awesome!
I think I’m in several locations at once (assuming that time is linear in your epic fantasy therapy multiverse), so I have no idea where to put the “YOU ARE HERE!” pin. Nevertheless, this is pure epic win.

How many genres could I mix up in one go?
It has already been suggested that I write a Tolkeinesque Epic to go with this.. its tempting to be fair
Time/space is never linear.. it just goes round in circles… and ‘you are here’ would depend on moment to moment.. might need to get some boots of super-walking-power to get round the island in 50 minutes. Go..go..Gadget..Legs!!

/ February 6, 2011Hi SC,
Oh I’m addicted to all sorts.. I like the “urban fantasy” stuff like Robert Rankin and Neil Gaiman and of course Terry Pratchett (more great illustrations on the traditional covers and I’m SO glad they still publish them in the covers I bought when I was 15!) But yes, more epic stuff like Tolkein, a bit of Robin Hobb and love stuff that tips over into true story telling (back to Gaiman) but I recently discovered a book called The Last Wish by Andrzej Sapkowski… I ought to put a fiction section for my bookshelves **eyes left**
Thanks for the compliment – thats the second reference to EH Shepard in 2 days
I love the Pooh. You are very very kind.

/ February 6, 2011Oh I really want one of these! Thanks for making posters, thats in my budget!!
I love the seamonster the best but I didnt see him at first lol will he be in a cartoon soon?
WG
/ February 6, 2011You’re welcome Rachel. I hope they come out well. It took a very long time to draw and to edit, not to mention to colour in Photoshop – I had to keep practicing different levels of colour transparency to get it right.
I rather like the little sea monster.. there are plenty of monsters in therapy sessions so perhaps he will make an appearance.. who knows!

/ February 6, 2011Awesome. And if not a novel (or a series), how about a game? They make all those therapy games for kids – why not us? Then you can look at the board instead of at the therapist…or the client!
WG
/ February 6, 2011Tom you’ve just given me a rather wonderful idea…

/ February 7, 2011Awesome! Maybe I could pin this to my therapist’s wall so when she asks me what I want to discuss I could just close my eyes spin and point. I’m sure I’m in most of these places all at once! I really like the tiny ship sailing to the big land mass. Yikes!
