Critic – Therapy Tales #339

I love those cartoons (Donald Duck stylie) where the character literally splits or has a devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other. Lots of (most?) people have voices of self doubt. Sometimes it’s a healthy functional Superego-based tool to prevent you from eating All The IceCream or making a prat of yourself in public. But for many who end up in therapy, it’s something a bit crueler and a lot harder to live with. Often it’s an internalised parental voice and yes, therapy can help. Unfortunately, it’s not always that simple to quiet the voice of self-doubt. And sometimes it’s not even a voice – one can feel that there is something/someone sitting in silent disapproving judgement of everything one does or attempts to do.

As someone whose inner critic is not so much a single voice as a 1000-strong choir and fully integrated part of my being, the idea of silencing, reducing or removing said negativity and self-doubt can seem less like an exercise in verbal therapeutic gymnastics and more like an extreme psychological root canal.

Thank you for reading and for all the lovely emails about what this cartoon series means to you. Every single one of them is precious to me :)

I am now taking a vacation and will be back online sometime after next week. During this period of offlinitude I will be drawing a few completely new things which I’ll tell you about in due course, but mostly just resting and recuperating some creative whizzbang superpowers which have recently been drained by Life.

Be good. I’ll leave you with a different type of cartoon. (and if anyone wants to email me a future guest post please feel free)
