It is my mission in life to disrupt office work, either by loud barks, or by the passage of coffee through the nose whilst reading cartoons

Splinteredones
/ June 27, 2011HAH! How about slaps in the other direction???
WG
/ June 27, 2011Ah now, just to prove that I do think about these things:
Drawing a “slap” from the therapist is funnier because it is safer – everyone “knows” that a therapist would never act out in that way. Making it the client that does the slapping would be far too close (imho) to what some clients may actually feel. And would no doubt lead to many many comments from both sides about how innappropriate that would be. In this case, it is so innapropriate and unlikely that it becomes ridiculous and therefore.. (hopefully) funnier.
In addition, because the therapist slapping is such an outrageously unlikely event, it plays with the balance of power between the two.. the idea that the highly (overly?) controlled therapist could ever break out like this is laughable, unrealistic, and therefore (as described above) the humour is “safe”.
The point of these cartoons is to mess with the power balance and to push the boundaries of the relationship, the theory behind it, and of course humour.
Well, you did ask

/ June 27, 2011As a recovering Freudian, I assume that a Freudian slap would be a punch in the…id. You know, someplace really really tender.
Is that what’s happening off-camera?
WG
/ June 27, 2011yes exactly
